Muhurta Chintamani: The Five Sacred Limbs of Time (Panchanga) & Rahu Kaal Segments

Shubhashubha Prakaranam • Shloka 1–4 • Authored by Daivajna Acharya Rama (16th Century CE)

(Canonical Sanskrit Manuscript)

tithiśca vāraṁ ca nakṣatraṁ yogaḥ karaṇameva ca | pañcāṅgasya phalaṁ jñātvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate || sūryavārādikāleṣu rāhūṇāmaṣṭamāṁśakaḥ | ravyādi-śaniparyantaṁ kālo'yaṁ tyājya ucyate ||

English Purport

Panchanga comprises 5 cosmic measurements: Tithi (Lunar day = 12° Sun-Moon separation), Vaara (Solar weekday), Nakshatra (Lunar constellation = 13°20'), Yoga (Sun+Moon sum = 13°20'), and Karana (Half-Tithi = 6°). Each day is partitioned into 8 equal daytime segments, of which one specific segment is ruled by Rahu and strictly avoided for auspicious undertakings.

AstroGuru Mathematical Implementation

calculateTithi(), calculateNityaYoga(), calculateKarana(), and calculateVaara() implement these exact degree-based subdivisions with Swiss Ephemeris sidereal inputs.
